At PYC Logistics, we recently executed a 116 MT breakbulk shipment of industrial equipment of 29 MT each from Nhava Sheva, India to Veracruz, Mexico, demonstrating our capability in managing complex onboard operations for oversized and heavy cargo.

This movement involved 4 breakbulk packages, each requiring specialized handling, lifting, stowage planning, and onboard securing.

When industrial equipment exceeds standard container dimensions, logistics execution becomes significantly more complex. Cargo handling shifts from conventional containerized operations to specialized breakbulk and heavy lift methodologies where every stage from cargo preparation and transport for the under-hook loading for the vessel and onboard securing operations directly impacts project success.

Why This Cargo Could Not Move in Containers

While the cargo dimensions technically exceeded standard container limits, the primary challenge was its extreme out-of-gauge width and weight combination.

Cargo Characteristics
  • Length: 12.13 meters
  • Width: 4.90 meters
  • Height: 3.70 meters
  • Weight: 29 MT per package

At nearly 5 meters wide, the cargo significantly exceeded the operational acceptance limits typically applied by container shipping lines and marine terminals for flat rack or platform container movements.

Even where specialized equipment such as flat racks or platforms may be available, shipping lines evaluate factors including:

  • Excess width over container footprint
  • Cargo weight concentration
  • Terminal handling capabilities
  • Vessel stowage restrictions
  • Lifting and securing requirements
  • Port-specific acceptance criteria

For cargo of this size, obtaining acceptance from container carriers and terminals becomes increasingly difficult and often commercially impractical.

As a result, the shipment was planned and executed as breakbulk cargo, allowing the units to be handled directly as individual heavy-lift packages without the operational limitations associated with containerized transport.

This approach provided:

  • Greater flexibility in vessel selection
  • Safer cargo handling procedures
  • More suitable stowage arrangements
  • Reduced operational risk during loading and discharge
  • Compliance with carrier and terminal handling requirements

Key Operational Considerations

1. Lifting Arrangement Verification

Prior to lifting, the team verified:

  • Sling angles
  • Spreader requirements
  • Lifting points
  • Safe Working Load (SWL)
  • Cargo stability during hoisting

Improper lifting arrangements can lead to cargo deformation, equipment damage, or operational delays.

2. Controlled Hoisting Operations

Heavy cargo was lifted using specialized port equipment and transferred from quay to vessel while maintaining stability throughout the lifting cycle.

Factors monitored included:

  • Wind conditions
  • Cargo balance
  • Crane radius
  • Dynamic load effects
  • Vessel movements
3. Safe Stowage Placement

Once onboard, cargo was positioned according to the vessel’s approved cargo plan.

The stowage plan considered:

  • Deck strength limitations
  • Weight distribution
  • Vessel stability
  • Accessibility at discharge port
  • Securing arrangements

The industrial equipment was successfully transported from India to Mexico through coordinated breakbulk and onboard handling operations.

The project highlighted the importance of:

  • Detailed planning
  • Technical cargo understanding
  • Safe lifting practices
  • Proper marine securing
  • Experienced operational supervision

These factors collectively contribute to successful project cargo execution.
